A pair of wedding bands takes the
meaning and significance of a wedding ring a step further.
Couples wear wedding rings to show that they are committed to
spend the rest of their life together. In the case of wedding
band pairs, the basic design concept of both rings is similar.
This does not mean that the rings are exactly identical,
infact the two rings in a pair of wedding band rings cannot be
exactly the same. It is unlikely that the husband and wife
would have the same ring size, this itself will. Similarly the
gemstones and ring band width might not be the same too. As
expected, the lady might want to wear a narrower wedding band
as compared to the man.
So what should be considered when
choosing the band width for a pair of wedding band rings. Let
us discuss this issue with a look at various factors that
would influence the decision of ring band width. By Kaisilver
statistics that relate to wedding band pairs ordered for the
past 4 to 5 years, we have the following buyer preference for
band width. Men's wedding bands are generally preferred with
band widths in the 8mm to 10mm range. There are few exceptions
though, as we have crafted both gold and silver wedding bands
for men with band widths that go to even 1.5cm (15mm). When it
comes to lady's wedding band rings, the width selected is
usually in the 5mm to 7mm range.

Below are a few factors that would
influence the band width selection for wedding band
pairs:
Personal
Preference: This ofcourse is what most buyers wish to
follow, their personal liking. However the important thing is
that the other factors that we explain below might not allow a
buyer to go by his or her personal choice when ordering a pair
of wedding band rings.
Metal: A decade
ago you would hardly hear about silver wedding band pair
rings, silver was taught to be too ordinary for special
occassion rings. Though gold wedding band sets still outnumber
the number of 925 silver wedding band rings ordered each
year, you could say that the gap between the two metal options
is quickly reducing. Gold prices are rising and there is no
indication of a top off or reduction trend in this metal
pricing. So when you order gold jewelry today and that
includes gold wedding band pairs, the metal cost is a
significant component of the price tag. To produce any jewel
that is well crafted and sturdy, the metal weight needs to be
proportional to the ring size and other dimensions of the
jewel. With this information it is obvious that, a gold ring
with a wider band width would involve more gold weight and
vice versa. Try saving on gold weight to reign in the price
tag and you will surely get a jewel that needs frequent
repairs for bending or denting.
The scene is a bit different for a
pair of sterling silver wedding bands. Though silver prices
have also started climbing the ladder, the price of this metal
is much lower as compared to gold. Since metal weight and cost
should not be a big issue with most buyers, it is more likely
that the buyer could follow personal preference for the band
width of the wedding bands.
Plain or Studded:
You could have a pair of plain wedding band rings that have no
diamonds or gems. In the case of plain wedding bands, the
issue of gem and diamond pricing will not be involved, the
cost of the ring with reference to metal weight and band width
will be fairly easy to assess. When it comes to gem stones or
diamonds in wedding band rings, the type of gemstone and the
price can play an important role in deciding the band width
and ring price.
For example, if you wanted a pair
of diamond wedding bands but were on a tight budget, a diamond
size would be 3mm to 4mm rounds. With this option, the band
width of the rings would be in the 5mm to 6mm range. Gems like
rubies, sapphires, emeralds, demantoid garnet, natural
alexandrite and even tanzanite can be expensive as the size of
the gemstone increases. This would need to be taken into
account when choosing the band width for your wedding band.
Metal Weight: We
already mentioned that the metal weight for a pair of wedding
band rings needs to be proportional to the ring size and
dimensions. Let us presume that you needed a size 10 mens
wedding band ring with with a band width of 10mm. In an ideal
situation, we would suggest a gold weight of around 20 to 25
grams for the ring. Should your budget not be able to support
the cost structure for a gold wedding band with this weight,
we would suggest that you moderate the band width down to
around 8mm. A pair of yellow or white gold wedding bands with
low metal weight can bend or dent, gems and diamonds (if any)
can then loosen and even drop off the ring.
At Kaisilver we always recommend
sterling silver as an option, in cases where the budget
available to a buyer is too low to support a sturdy gold
jewel. Wedding rings are often required at a time when the
couple has many other expenses to cater to. It might be a good
idea to go for a pair of silver wedding bands and then, switch
to gold when financial issues have eased. Tough the remaking
of wedding bands is not a tradition, there are practical
situations in life when traditions and customs need to be set
aside.
Budget: In many
cases, the budget allocated to the pair of wedding band rings
has a strong bearing on the type of rings, metal and ofcourse
band width for the jewels. We do come across couples searching
for a pair of 'cheap' wedding bands but, do not feel that it
is the right way to look for such auspicious jewels. Think of
options, simple rings, no gems or diamonds, silver wedding
bands as a possibility etc. It might be a good idea to search
for a good custom jewelry provider and discuss your budget
limitations. At Kaisilver we welcome such queries even if the
buyer plans to source the rings from any other source.
Ring Size: The
ring size is not the same as the band width, the ring size is
defined by the diameter of the finger on which the ring would
be worn. As a general suggestion, ladys ring sizes of around 6
to 8.5 could have a band width of around 5mm to 7mm. When it
comes to mens wedding band rings, a size of around 8 to 10
would ideally be supported with a ring band width of around
8mm to 10mm. Large ring sizes with small band widths might
look a bit strange and vice versa. There is no fixed table set
for this equation, follow your personal choice and temper it
with the available budget and gemstone or diamond that you
plan to use for your wedding band rings.
Custom or
Readymade: This will be a decision that needs
to be made with sufficient time on hands. A readymade
jewel is brought off the shelf, it could probably be resized
to your requirements but no other customization can be done.
On the other hand a custom wedding band pair can be fully
tailormade and include all your preferences. It is however an
option that will take around 4 to 6 weeks for production,
since each jewel needs to be made from scratch. Since we do
not buy wedding rings very often, it is a good idea to
consider made to order wedding band pairs. Select the right
jeweler and you will get a set of jewels that you will cherish
for a lifetime and even for generations to come.
