The Romans truly belived that moonstone was formed from solidified moonlight (rays). The fact is that moonstone does exhibit an enchanting sheen that, reminds you of soft moonlight. The modern day gemologist has a more scientific explanation for this visual effect seen on the gem. Moonstone is formed with an alternating layered structure of two species of feldspar, orthoclase and albite. Light that hits the stone and travels through it gets defracted and carries a gorgeous glow as it returns to the eye. A cut and polished piece of moonstone clearly shows it's pearly and opalescent luster. It is no wonder that the Romans and Greeks associated moonstone with their lunar gods and godesses.

Even a casual glance at a moonstone ring will leave you impressed with the enchanting glow of the gemstone. Interestingly, a piece of rough (uncut and unpolished) moonstone gives you no hint of the soft glowing sheen that the gem holds. The journey of the gemstone from the mine to your moonstone ring is punctuated by one very vital factor, the skill of an extremely talented and experienced gem cutter. The rough stone needs to be perfectly oriented before it takes the first cut, this is where experience counts. The next important aspect is the thickness (depth) of the cut stone - the orientation and the depth of the gem will together determine whether you get an amazing moonstone or a piece of lifeless mineral. Fortunately, you do not have to worry about cutting and shaping the gem - Kaisilver relies on some of the finest gem cutters in the industry. We procure each gem from the mines and custom cut the gem to precisely fit every gold or 925 silver mount that we craft.

The soft color and perfectly visible sheen of white moonstone has made it the preferred choice for most moonstone rings but, the stone is also found in a few other colors. When you order your gold or 925 silver moonstone ring from Kai Silver, you can request for a white, grey or peach colored moonstone. All these gems are natural and untreated - this because of our ability to directly procure every gem that is found on the planet. The most common shapes for moonstone gems are round and oval and these are the shapes that you will find on most moonstone rings.

Back to the issue related to the importance of cutting to bring out the gorgeous glow in a moonstone - we had mentioned that the gem needs to be oriented the right way and cut with the right depth. We should have mentioned that the gem needs to have a smooth (cabachon) cut too. So can you order a moonstone ring with a gem that is cut with facets - the answer is yes but, make sure that you understand the implications. A faceted moonstone will not show the glow and if it is the glow that you expect then, go for a cabachon (facetless) cut for the gem in your moonstone ring. We have received a few orders for men's moonstone rings with a request for faceted moonstone gems, the customer was pleased with the result but we made sure that the issue of the missing glow was understood.

When you decide to buy a jewel (any jewel) you would obviously want to know how sturdy and wearable the jewel is. So here are the technicals about moonstone rings. Firstly, the durability of a jewel depends on a number of factors and not just, the toughness of the gemstone. When we design the concept and construction of any jewel, we strive to build in as many durability related features that are possible. For example, a moonstone ring designed and crafted by the Kaisilver team would have a metal weight (gold or silver) that, is around 40% to 60% more than what other jewelers would provide. This is the foundation for a strong jewel, a light weight piece of junk will dent and bend at the slightest excuse. Backed by a healthy metal weight, we implement a gem setting that provides gem protection while firmly holding the stone in place. A moonstone ring that uses prong setting for the stone, is more likely to suffer from loose gemstones over a period of time. If you choose a design that must use prong settings, we will provide prongs that are tough and rounded - this ensures that the prongs do not open up easily or get caught in clothes and pockets.

Now coming to the hardness of moonstone, a feature that is measured by the Mohs scale which rates gem hardness on a scale from 1-10 where, 10 is the hardest. Your moonstone ring will not have the hardest stone found on the planet but, it will surely not need too much of fussing and attention. With a hardness rating of 6-6.5, you will need to be a little careful and ensure that, the stone is not struck by physical impact. When cleaning your custom moonstone ring, use the popular combination of a soft clean brush, a bowl of clean water at room temperature and a few drops of mild soap. It is best to avoid using ultrasound driven cleaning devices when cleaning gold or 925 silver moonstone rings. We generally recommend that silver rings be left unplated because, any type of plating done on silver tends to wear off after a while. Cleaning a sterling silver moonstone ring that shows signs of tarnish is not a big worry. Begin by using a reputed silver jewelry cleaning lotion or cream, follow the instructions as explained by the polishing medium. Keep in mind that all jewelry polishing solutions contain chemicals and these, might get stuck to the stone or metal. A thorough rinse and wash in plain clean water and a gentle dab with a soft brush, will get rid of any chemical elements left behind by the jewelry polishing medium.

Here is a small piece of advice that applies to all jewels and not just to your custom made moonstone ring. When you happen to take off your ring make sure that it is tucked away safely. Bundling jewels together in a bag or jewelry box is not the right way to store them. Jewels rubbing against each other can cause them to get scratched, it is therefore recommended that your jewelry box have separate padded compartments for each jewel. With this arrangement it would also be easier to spot a specific jewel that you plan to wear and even, notice jewels that might be missing from the box. Jewelry lovers can never get enough of jewels and at the same time, they cannot bear to see one of their jewels damaged or broken - the above suggestions should go a long way in keeping unpleasant surprises at bay.
