While custom jewellery does appeal to fashion concious buyers, it is not just fashion
that encourages jewellery lovers to look for custom made jewellery. Readymade jewellery
is mass produced with the intention of appealing to large markets. Mass produced
jewellery cannot cater to specific buyer requirements. Custom made jewellery allows
individual attention to be given to every aspect of each jewel. Skilled craftsmen
and gem stone cutters are used to create high quality custom jewellery. It is often
thought that, custom jewellery is needed only for very expensive gold jewels. It is
true that not many jewelers are willing to make single piece custom jewels in silver but,
technically there is no reason why you cannot produce good quality sterling silver
jewellery that is custom made.
Let us consider a few cases where custom jewellery can help you get the jewel of your
choice.
Customized Design: You might come across a gorgeous readymade ring with
5 gems in yellow gold. The design is awesome but you really don't care much for yellow
gold and prefer white gold instead. The 5 gems in the ring might have a round shape and
you wished that they were square instead, you might prefer to have just 4 gems instead
of 5. If you had to go for the ring of your choice, it would require a complete remake
of the ring design, mould and white gold mounting. Working with a custom jewelry provider
would allow you to get exactly what you need. Being based in the heart of the world's
jewelry industry in Thailand, we can create the ring for you without a problem. You could
email us images or rough sketches of what you need and our designing team will work on
your requirements to create the jewel of your dreams.
Customizing Gems: You walk into a showroom selling expensive diamond
rings and come across an extravagant diamond solitaire ring. You are told that the ring
flashes a top quality diamond that is responsible for a price tag that sounds more like
a Pin Code for an address. You do know that diamonds are available in different grades
and the price tag could go as low as 40-50% if, the ring was custom made with diamonds that
were in the medium range quality. Most posh showrooms actually work with limited inventories.
They might be willing to customize your diamond ring for you but the price would still be inflated
by 50% to 70%. As another example, imagine that you would like to have the same ring made
with a very modestly price blue topaz, or even choose sterling silver as the metal for the ring.
Custom made jewellery would be your best bet in these situations. Always source custom jewellery
directly from the producer who controls the entire production process. Working with jewellers
who go through a chain of middlemen adds to the final price of your jewel.
Customizing Dimensions: If you like a particular pendant but find
it to be too large for your liking, you will need to get a custom made pendant that
retains the original design but alters the dimensions according to your needs. This
is not as easy as it seems, the custom jewellery provider will need to remake the entire
mould and the metal weight will need to reflect the new dimensions of the pendant.
When jewellers offer rings in all sizes, there really is no major customization done.
The jeweller simply uses a heating device and stretches or contracts the existing
mould or ring. True custom jewellery would require the mould to be made as per the
required size, the metal weight will need to be adjusted according to the current
size too. Taking a size 7 ring and stretching it to fit a size 9 finger means that,
the metal thickness on the ring has lessened. This reduces the durability of the
ring and it could bend or deform easily.
Customizing Metals: The basic metal options for jewellery today are,
gold and sterling silver. If you choose gold, you could select 14k or 18k gold for
your custom jewellery requirements. 10k gold is generally used to mass produce low weight
jewellery for casual wear. It is generally agreed that 10k gold has a very small
percentage of gold and is therefore, not suitable for producing good quality jewels.
When it comes to gold colors, the choice would include white gold, yellow gold and
probably rose gold too. Things get a bit tougher when you try to find good quality
custom made sterling silver jewellery. Jewellers for some reason give second class
treatment to silver jewellery. It is often felt that silver jeweller buyers
only need cheap priced jewels and are willing to compromise on quality. Kaisilver
accepts all custom jewellery orders in gold or sterling silver. Equal care and attention
is given to gold and silver jewellery. While it is possible to custom make platinum
jewellery, you should know that platinum is almost twice as expensive as gold. The
processing overheads including metal process losses are significant when producing
single piece platinum jewellery.
Customizing Weight: This is a very important issue as it directly
influences the longterm durability of your jewel. Most jewellery buyers look
only at price tags and external appearance when making a buying decision. Jewellers
are aware of this and work hard to produce low priced jewellery. They ofcourse
need to add their showroom rent and commission for sales staff on the price tag!
The only way to produce low priced jewels is to compromise on quality, mass production
helps to a certain extent. Compromising on metal weight is one of the most popular
gimmicks. But light weight jewels are not durable, gemstone mounting can be flimsy
and the jewels can deform easily. Custom jewellery on the other hand is made specifically
for a particular buyer, the jeweller need not worry about mass markets. There are
no readymade moulds to work with and this allows compete creation from start to
finish. The metal weight can therefore be made proportionate to the size and
dimensions of the custom made jewel. The jewel will have the best type of gem stone mounting
as the jeweller need not worry about, lack of metal weight to handle a specific gemstone mount.
In the longterm, a healthy metal weight translates into better durability.
Customizing Craftsmanship: Few people know that good craftsmanship does
more than just beautify a jewel. Custom jewellery made by skilled craftsmen has a quality
that far surpasses, mass produced jewellery that relies on trained machine operators.
Skilled gem stone cutters also make a big difference to the quality of jewellery that
is produced. A good design, good metal weight and good gems can all be wasted if put
in the hands of a craftsmen who lacks the necessary expertise. Custom jewellery should
be handled by skilled craftsmen and be provided with undivided attention for every single
detail. Kaisilver jewellery is worked on by over 3,500 skilled craftsmen in Thailand.
These are the best trained and most knowledgeable craftsmen, specializing in every
aspect of jewellery production. Strict quality control checks are implemented at
every phase of production. We are aware that most jewellers do just one quality check
and that is done before shipping. This is really not the way high end custom jewellery
should be made, we have therefore made our standards more stringent and exacting.
