The story that surrounds the origin of the first Claddagh ring is fascinating and touching. An Irish fisherman by the name of Robert Joyce lived in a small Irish fishing village named Claddagh. One day, the boat in which Robert was sailing was attacked by pirates. The time was over 300 years ago and slavery was rampant on many parts of the globe. The pirates sold all the captives as slaves and young Robert found himself toiling for a wealthy goldsmith. He kept thinking of his beloved in the Claddagh village and often dreamt of seeing her again.

Robert Joyce slowly learnt the trade from his master and started making a ring as a symbol of love for his beloved. A few years later he was released from slavery and returned to his village, he was overjoyed to meet his beloved and gifted the ring that he had made to her. The couple were soon married and lived happily ever after. As the story of Robert Joyce spread, the ring with a very humble beginning went on to become the now world famous, Claddagh ring.

Design Variations For The Claddagh Ring
Many jewelry designers have tried to improvise or alter the design of the original Claddagh ring. In one variation that was tried around a 100 years ago, two hearts were held in the hands instead of one. Claddagh rings were also attempted with no crown being placed on the heart in the ring. This was mainly because people interpreted the crown to mean loyalty to a king or throne, and did not think that it was relevant today. However, in today's world it would be more correct to interpret the crown to show loyalty between friends, between family members or between lovers. We would like to mentiont that, the claddagh ring with no gemstone is not really a variation of the ring. This is because, the original claddagh ring did infact not have any gemstone at all. The idea of putting a gemstone in the claddagh ring was done with an intention to enhance the meaning and appeal of claddagh rings. This also made them very suitable for birthstone rings or wedding and engagement rings with birthstones.

There are three distinct features that should be present in a ring for it to be called a claddagh ring. The first is the heart shaped center which can be with or without a gemstone. The second feature is the hands holding the heart and the final feature is the crown on the heart. People are today aware that the ring is a symbol of love, friendhsip and loyalty. This is the reason why the various design modifications to the claddagh ring have not met with much success and people always went back to the original design of this legendary ring.
